Iraq, Kentucky Vie For World Shooting-Into-The-Air Supremacy

I recently recalled to memory one of my all-time favorite articles on the Onion. It's about the common bond between residents of Kentucky and Iraq, and their battle for "World Shooting-Into-The-Air Supremacy". The article and the site is a bit on the PG side.

Enjoy! :)

MySpace: Social Networking for Old Folks

What, exactly, is MySpace turning into? DeWolfe says he sees it as a "lifestyle brand." But a brand has to stand for something. And with all the growth and evolution of the site, it's hard to fathom what that lifestyle even is. No question, the MySpace user base is changing. Some 87% of users today are 18 or older; 52% are 35 or older, according to comScore. Might MySpace become too big and broad and successful to be cool? One MySpace observer, Martin Sorrell, who heads ad giant WPP, believes it could: "MySpace could be like a fashion brand. The more successful you get, the more common you become." DeWolfe disagrees: "We're not deciding what's cool. Our users are," he says. "MySpace is all about letting people be what they want to be."

I don't care to read the big long article, but the idea that basically half of Myspace users are 35 or older... whoa!

So maybe we should re-think using myspace to connection with teens -- 17 and younger only make up 13% of the crew.

However, do the stats take into account all the 12-year-olds that say they're 102 so that Myspace lets them sign up? :O

Emergent Speaks On Desiring God

Or actually, Tony Jones speaks - I imagine he'd be quick to point out the fact that not everything he says is speaking for Emergent Village.

First, his thoughts on his lunch with John Piper. Nothing earth-shattering here, but we do have his perspective on the lunch, and just a tad more info than what Dr. Piper shared at Desiring God.

Second, his complaint against Tim Keller. After voicing his respect for Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian in NYC, he has this this to say:
But I have a bone to pick. At John Piper's conference here in Minneapolis last week, Keller responded to a Justin Taylor question by stating that Emergent is 1) moving away from orthodoxy, and 2) not starting any churches or institutions.

Tony bristles at this thought, saying that people are starting Emergent/emerging churches, that seminaries are at least approaching them about partnerships, and that Keller has not addressed how they are straying from orthodoxy.

Probably the conversation with pastors, especially in the context of being asked to predict the future of Emergent, would not be a forum in which for Keller to detail all of his thoughts about Emergent. You can listen or download the audio from that Conversation with Pastors here.

Like Tony, I've grown to respect Keller a great deal. You can find Steve McCoy's bordering on obsessive, one-stop shop for all things Keller here.
