V-R Day

In the spirit of the recent recognition of VE (Victory in Europe) Day, I declare today VR (Victory in Romance) day.

That's right, I'm getting married today. Perhaps the war terminology isn't the most appropriate. Friday was one of the craziest days ever. I spent so much time on the phone, with other calls coming while I was still on the phone with the original person. It's so weird having family that flies or drives in from across the country, and you still hardly see them. My grandparents arrived from Colorado, and I saw them at the rehearsal dinner, and that was it. They went to their hotel to go to bed, and now I'll see them at the wedding. And then I'll be gone.

Ashlee looked amazing at rehearsal. Our officiant told me that he judges leadership potential by how much one marries up. He said that I will be a great leader some day. He's certainly right about marrying up; we'll see about the leadership.

I don't feel like I've felt nervous for a moment. Friday morning when I woke up and talked with Ashlee on the phone I had a moment of feeling weird, that *tomorrow* I'm getting married. Mostly I've been stressed about getting things done. Tonight I worked on compiling music for the reception. It's not a trivial task to find music that 1) you have access to 2) is good to dance to 3) provides a good balance of slow and fast songs 4) is kind on the ear of multiple generations 5) is clean. Mostly I have found that I was able to get lots of good slow songs but not so many faster songs. We have a few now and I might be able to get a few more tomorrow.

Here in about 12 hours we should be finishing up our ceremony, if it's not done already. I'll then be a husband and Ashlee will be my wife and we'll figure out how to live in those new roles.

I keep getting this impression from some members of my family that Ashlee really must not know me very well if she wants to marry me. And somehow I feel like it's only a little bit of a joke for them. One of our small group leaders at church told us early in our engagement that when you get married you're marrying a stranger.

Tomorrow I'll talk to strangers and I'll be looking for one particular drop-dead gorgeous stranger in a white dress!

Happy V-R Day.
