Mark Driscoll's Pastoral Perspective on Emergent

This article from Mark Driscoll, of Mars Hill Church in Seattle provides some insight into the history of Emergent, distinguishes between "Emerging" and "Emergent" and discusses some of the types of people that make up the Emerging Church.

The categories Mark described were from his conversation with Ed Stetzer, a North American Mission Board staff person whose title is not on his profile page. These categories have been outlines before in Stetzer's article, Understanding the Emerging Church. The category of "Relevants" One subcategory that Mark's article introduced was "Reformed Relevants". He listed the heroes of "Reformed Relevants" as John Piper, Tim Keller, and D.A. Carson (perhaps Driscoll himself would also be in this category).

He is very right to note the presence of Reformed, theologically conservative Christians that are interested in this conversation. Steve McCoy, operator of the Missional Baptist Blog seems to fall right into this category. McCoy and others, though, I think would bristle to be categorized in what Stetzer terms the "Relevants" that merely want to change styles in order to be more appealing or "relevant". Rather, at least initially, these types seem to fit most neatly in the "Reconstructionist" category - "generally theologically evangelical and dissatisfied with current forms of church". They note that "our nation is becoming less Christian and that those who profess faith are not living lives markedly different than non-Christians". But the mold breaks when the Reconstructionists are noted for their increased influence from main-line denominations.

Alas, neither category fits well for what Stetzer or Driscoll termed "Reformed Relevants". Perhaps this is why post-moderns shun categorizing - because often it fails to do justice to those categorized. Stetzer does well to note the presence of this sort of Christian, but to fit them into his analysis of the Emerging Church, he might have to redefine either "Relevants" or "Reconstructionists".

Where is the Evidence?

This article brings to light an instance of wrapping flesh around an often-posed hypothetical question:
If you were put on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

Star-Telegram.com | 03/26/2006 | Afghan court dismisses case against Christian convert, officials say: "An Afghan court on Sunday dismissed a case against a man who converted from Islam to Christianity because of a lack of evidence and he will be released soon, officials said."

This story is about a friend of mine. I hear he's pretty shaken up - say a prayer for him.

Afghan on trial for Christianity

BBC NEWS | South Asia | Afghan on trial for Christianity: "Observers say executing a converted Christian would be a significant precedent as a conservative interpretation of Sharia law in Afghanistan."

Did you catch that? A conservative interpretation of the law could call for the execution of someone converting to Christianity. Sounds like a great constitution.

Youth Worker Goes Back to High School

This 33-year-old youth worker got the bright idea to immerse himself in student culture by going back to high school for two weeks. He's blogging his experience. The question is, does Algebra homework take priority over changing the oil in his wife's car? Feeding their child?

Blatant Obedience

Check out this traffic experiment caught on video by a group of college students. A bunch of them go out on the freeway in cars, line up beside each other, and drive the speed limit. The chaos ensues from this blatant act of civil obedience.

Fascinating!

Recap of the IMB Situation

Marty Duren has posted a timeline of events relating to the International Mission Board's controversy surrounding a Trustee Board member speaking out against missionary selection policies adopted in November.

It would be an understatement to say that something just doesn't seem quite right.

Pray for our missionaries, that they won't let controversy in "Jerusalem" prevent them from sharing the good news of Christ around the world.
